Current Project: Laisamis, Kenya

Laisamis (pronounced: lie-same-us) can be found in the Northeastern province of Kenya. Located near the equator, the area is a semi-arid area with high temperatures and very long days. The dusty landscape is representative of the harsh living conditions there. The sparse plant life is doing its best to make the most of the unrelenting sun, while retaining all the moisture it can.

Located about 200 miles north of Nairobi, the Laisamis area is remote and largely underdeveloped. It is home to the nomadic Rendille tribe. The Laisamis District has a nomadic population of between 60,000 and 85,000 people. However, the town, which is located between Marsabit and Isiolo, has a semi-permanent population of about 7,500 people.
